1. What We Collect

When you create an account, we collect your email address and any profile information you choose to provide (display name, username). Authentication is handled by Clerk; we do not store your password.

When you add a location, submit a check-in, or upload a photo, we store that content along with your user ID and the date it was submitted.

When you use the map or search, your browser may share your device location with us to show nearby results. We do not log or store location requests on our servers beyond the duration of the request.

We use standard server logs that may include your IP address, browser type, and pages visited. These are retained for up to 30 days for security and debugging.

2. How We Use It

We use the data we collect to:

  • Display your contributions (locations, check-ins, photos) to other users
  • Associate your account with content you submit
  • Provide geographically relevant search results
  • Improve and maintain the platform
  • Respond to support requests sent to hello@vanoverlander.com

We do not sell your personal data. We do not use it for advertising.

3. Third-Party Services

VanOverlander uses the following third-party services that may process your data:

Map data is sourced from OpenStreetMap contributors under the Open Database License (ODbL).

4. Data Retention

Your account data is retained as long as your account is active. Content you submit (locations, check-ins, photos) remains on the platform after deletion to preserve community contributions; contact us to request removal.

To delete your account, email hello@vanoverlander.com. We will remove your account and associated personal data within 30 days.

5. Cookies

We use cookies only for authentication session management (set by Clerk). We do not use tracking or advertising cookies.

6. California Residents (CCPA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, request deletion of your data, and opt out of sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information. To exercise your rights, contact hello@vanoverlander.com.

7. Children

VanOverlander is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date at the top of this page will reflect the most recent revision. Continued use of VanOverlander after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
